The Transmission Department’s primary function is to facilitate safe and reliable operation of all transmission pipeline systems, transmission stations, distribution stations, and all large customer metering systems.
This position reports to Company’s Operations Center in Hendersonville, North Carolina.
Important Note: This role is considered safety sensitive, and as such, you may be required to undergo various background screenings. This may include but is not limited to a driving record abstract, criminal check, a company sponsored medical and drug testing.
What You Will Do:
- Inspect and maintaining cathodic protection (CP) systems by taking and interpreting Cathodic readings at test sites, rectifiers, and other facilities.
- Assisting local area personnel with troubleshooting of down systems.
- Supporting the Preventive and Mitigative Team through utilization of knowledge of company CP systems and opportunities for improvements.
- Working with the North Carolina Utility Commission on periodic pipeline inspections.
- Performing Direct Current Voltage Gradient (DCVG), Close Interval Survey (CIS), and Pipeline Current Mapping (PCM) surveys, soil resistivity measurement, and support direct assessments with visual analysis of whether corrosion is active and detailing the extent of any damage; providing technical expertise and ideas to accomplish goals and maintaining a sustained focus on work quality and safety.
- Completing appropriate paperwork to detail work performed.
- Strong CP knowledge and skills will be developed through internal and external training opportunities.
Who You Are:
Associate Corrosion Technician (0 – 2 years’ related experience)
- Completed high school or equivalent (i.e. GED).
- Possess a valid driver’s license with a safe driving history. A valid commercial driver’s license is highly preferred.
- Must acquire NACE CP Tester I Certification within 12 months of start date.
- Must be able to pass a physical to acquire a DOT medical card.
- Demonstrate basic electrical knowledge.
- Ability to read construction drawings and maps.
- Basic computer (i.e. Word, Excel, Outlook) and internet navigation skills.
- Strong leadership and communications skills to conduct and direct field crews and contractors, as well as, interact with others, to communicate clear instructions and to evaluate results are key.
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills for positive customer and contractor interactions are critical.
- Must have the ability to work after-hours, on-call rotations, nights, weekends, and be available for some overnight travel.
- Ability to work both independently and as a team member within a diverse team.
- Must be willing and able to meet a 45-minute emergency response time from the geographical center of the Asheville region.
- Emergency response time is a critical measure for the Company and you will be required to consistently meet this requirement, including when on-call.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills Abilities, & Experience
- 1+ years of experience operating heavy equipment and other construction equipment.
- 2+ years of experience operating and maintaining cathodic protection equipment (i.e. test stations, anodes, rectifiers).
- 2+ years using pipe locating equipment.
- Knowledge of DCVG, CIS, PCM surveys, soil resistivity measurement, etc. and the ability to support direct assessments with visual analysis.
- Bilingual (Spanish) candidates are preferred.
Working Conditions:
- Work is performed primarily outside in varying weather conditions (i.e. cold, heat, rain, etc.).
- Position requires travel throughout the service territory with safe driving/parking in a wide variety of situations and driving within construction zones.
Physical Requirements include but are not limited to: Balancing, bending and stooping, climbing, crawling, carrying (up to 70 pounds), grasping, kneeling, lifting (up to 70 pounds), pulling hand over hand, pushing, reaching above shoulder, repetitive motion, sitting, standing, walking, visual requirement (able to see screens, detect color coding, read fine print), hearing requirement.
Mental Requirements include but are not limited to: Ability to: understand, remember and apply oral and/or written instructions or other information, understand complex problems and collaborate/explore alternative solutions, organize thoughts and ideas into understandable terminology, organize and prioritize work schedule on a short-term basis, make decisions which have moderate impact on the immediate work unit and monitor impact outside this area, understand and follow basic instructions and guidelines, complete routine forms, compose letters, outlines, memoranda and basic reports and communicate with individuals via telephone.
