The Senior Manager, Mortgage Credit Risk reports to the AVP of Credit Risk. In this strategic role, the individual is responsible for reviewing and decisioning complex residential mortgage deals that are outside underwriter authority limits. There will be considerable exposure to clients with corporate entities as such the ability to interpret/analyse business financial statements is key. The incumbent is also responsible for managing the quality-assurance program to ensure that credit risk, underwriting quality and supporting documentation are within the established thresholds and risk tolerance.

 

The individual works closely with internal and external stakeholders to provide guidance on credit quality and propose areas of improvement to reduce risk, increase efficiency and ensure customer satisfaction. This Senior Manager will share their credit expertise through regular coaching of both their team and stakeholders. The individual will also oversee/participate in forums, meetings, and training sessions regarding credit analysis and quality-assurance.

 

Responsibilities

Credit Decisions

  • Underwrite residential mortgages that fall outside of lending guidelines.  Present to senior leadership as required.

  • Maintain decisioning data and identify improvement opportunities based on these metrics.

  • Monitor forms and processes used for credit decisioning; identify and implement enhancements.

 

Quality-Assurance (QA)

  • Oversee the quarterly quality-assurance program and present results to stakeholders.

  • Perform ad hoc QA mandate on specific mortgage sub-portfolios.

  • Plan for mortgage partner audits, act as partner liaison and provide guidance.

  • Review findings/issues related to credit from any audit or compliance validation and action accordingly.

  • Understand the audit and compliance requirements of the Mortgage business and the implications of the new mortgage operating model.

  • Research and stay informed about changing regulatory requirements; adapt QA program work accordingly.

 

Qualification

  • Education:  Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field or related experience.

  • 5 + years of experience in a mortgage underwriting role, specifically in analysing complex deals / structures.

  • Experience in a quality-assurance, audit and/or compliance role.

  • Expert understanding of High-Net-Worth clients, their income sources, and their lending needs.

  • Comprehensive experience analysing business financial statements.

  • Comprehensive knowledge of audit methodologies, mortgage underwriting, mortgage products and the regulatory environment.

  • Highly effective written and verbal communication skills.

  • Strong problem solving and decision-making skills particularly when faced with ambiguity.

  • Ability to assess situations from multiple angles and consider potential risks.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team; sense of initiative.

  • Proficient in Microsoft 365 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

  • Bilingual English/French would be an asset.
