We are currently seeking highly motivated, ambitious, self-starters for an Engineer I position to provide natural gas design and support for the Engineering Projects Team.
This position reports to our Operations Center in Apex, North Carolina.
Candidates graduating in May, 2025 will be considered.
What You Will Do:

Designs and plans pipeline and mechanical systems projects in support of North Carolina’s natural gas distribution and transmission piping networks.

Performs industrial metering design and standard development.
-
Manages metering and regulating application, sizing and technical support.
-
Assists with the preparation of project drawings.

Completes cost estimation for gas system facility projects
-
Conducts material evaluation, specification, and approval for new and existing gas facility products.

Coordinates and manages outside engineering resources.
-
Develops process and materials standards.
-
Supports and trains other engineers and office staff.

Develops subject matter expertise in key technical areas
-
Supports other business units and/or objectives as identified.
Who You Are:
Candidates will be considered for employment based upon the following criteria which is specific to the Gas Strategic Business Unit:
-
Engineer I : 0 – 2 years of relevant engineering experience
-
Valid driver’s license with a safe driving record.
-
Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited college or university is required. (Mechanical or Civil Engineering degrees are preferred.)
-
Prior experience working as an Engineering Co-op or Engineering Intern with a natural gas utility required.
-
Proven ability to communicate both orally and in writing in a competent and professional manner.
-
Project management experience in the design and construction of pipeline facilities (or other equivalent engineering/construction management or coordination experience).
-
Relevant technical and analytical skills necessary to successfully design and construct pipeline facilities.
-
Ability to build strong business relationships and collaborate effectively with a variety of employees.
-
Proficient computer knowledge and skills in Microsoft Office products and the ability to learn new computer software/systems.
-
A strong desire for continued knowledge and skills development and a willingness to accept future roles of increased responsibility.
-
Ability to adhere to safety and environmental policies/procedures.
-
Ability to work independently and as a member of a diverse team.
-
Willingness to travel to work at other locations (travel expenses reimbursed).
-
Work may be required outside of normal business hours.
Required Engineering Criteria:
-
Possess a 4-year engineering degree from an ABET accredited Engineering program based on the year that the Engineering program was accredited by ABET, or
-
Possess a 4-year Engineering degree from an institution outside of the U.S. which is accredited through the country’s own Engineering accrediting body under the Washington Accord as a full signatory, and is a degree that was recognized by the country’s accrediting body on or after the date that full signatory status was achieved, or
-
Possess a 4-year degree in Engineering (non-ABET accredited), Physics, Chemistry, Math or Engineering Technology and a post-graduate Engineering degree from an institution where the undergraduate degree in the same Engineering discipline is ABET-accredited based on the year the Engineering program was accredited by ABET, or
-
Holds or has previously held a valid U.S. Professional Engineer license.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Experience
-
Registered as an Engineer in Training (EIT) or Professional Engineer (PE) within North Carolina, OR, the ability to obtain one of these designations within six months of employment.

Natural gas utility engineering and/or operations experience.
-
Working knowledge of regulatory requirements (including but not limited to Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) 49 Part 192, Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) regulations, and North Carolina Utilities Commission (NCUC) regulations.

Advanced computer proficiency (Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint, MicroStation and/or AutoCAD, Flow Analysis Software, and Synergi Software.
-
Bilingual (Spanish) communication skills.
Other Working Conditions
The majority of work is performed in an office environment. Occasionally, work is performed outside at job sites in varying weather conditions.
Availability to travel to other office locations and job sites across North Carolina is required.

Mental Requirements (Both field & office) include but are not limited to:
Ability to: understand, remember and apply oral and/or written instructions or other information, understand complex problems and collaborate/explore alternative solutions, organize thoughts and ideas into understandable terminology, organize and prioritize work schedule on a short-term basis, make decisions which have moderate impact on the immediate work unit and monitor impact outside this area, understand and follow basic instructions and guidelines, complete routine forms, compose letters, outlines, memoranda and basic reports and communicate with individuals via telephone.
