As the Senior Legal Counsel, you will report to an Associate General Counsel and you will be part of a team of in-house legal professionals who provide comprehensive regulatory, litigation, employment/labour and commercial support. 

This position will focus on managing and resolving a variety of regulatory, dispute, litigation and employment matters for the Gas Distribution & Storage business unit (GDS) and advising internal clients on legal and risk analyses for such matters.

What you will do:

  • Provide regulatory, litigation and employment related legal support and guidance to GDS businesses and other Enbridge business units, as required, directly and through management of and collaboration with internal and external legal resources in an efficient and cost-effective manner.  Counsel internal clients expertly and reliably. 

  • Manage legal strategy and requirements and assist in reducing Enbridge’s liability and risk in relation to regulatory proceedings and compliance matters primarily involving the Ontario Energy Board (OEB), but also related to the Ontario Technical Standards and Safety Authority, Ontario government ministries and the Canada Energy Regulator.

  • Prepare and review regulatory applications and evidence and assist with legal representation and regulatory strategy on applications, projects, and issues, including witness preparation and presentation of submissions.

  • Litigate cases, advise on pre-litigation disputes, and manage internal and external legal resources for these matters, including matters related to breach of contract, personal injury, property damage, and employment and labour disputes.  Conduct examinations for discovery and mediations.

  • Monitor developments and advise clients about potential legal and regulatory ramifications of actions, decisions, applicable laws, and regulatory requirements.

  • Assist management with negotiations and by drafting agreements correspondence, opinions, presentations and educational seminars on litigation, regulatory and employment/labour matters as required.

  • Advise on energy policy and energy transition matters related to regulatory obligations and proceedings, such as demand-side management programs, business development initiatives and climate change regulations. 

Who you are:

Required:

  • Canadian law degree, qualification, or ability to qualify as a member in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario, and a minimum of 8 or more years of related legal experience, preferably with prior experience working on OEB matters and litigating before the Ontario Superior Court of Justice

  • Highly developed ability to identify and respond to complex legal, regulatory, and business issues on short notice, and under strict time constraints.

  • Ability to work independently, make decisions and meet multiple deadlines in a potentially stressful environment.

  • Meticulous attention to detail, but pragmatic in approach

  • Executive-level oral and written communication skills, leadership, and people skills

  • A broad understanding of and experience with Ontario natural gas and electricity industries and regulatory frameworks 

  • A criminal record check will be required at the final stages of the recruitment process.

Preferred:

  • Knowledge of and experience with applicable Canadian regulatory frameworks, litigation, administrative tribunals, environmental, corporate and commercial laws are assets.
