Purpose

 

Provides strategic direction, leadership and oversight for Private Banking in Canada ensuring business strategies, plans and initiatives are supported in compliance with governing regulations, internal policies and procedures.

 

Accountabilities 

 

  • Leads and drives a customer focused culture throughout their team to deepen client relationships and leverage broader Bank relationships, systems, and knowledge.

 

  • Leads the establishment and execution of Private Banking’s strategic operational business plans: 

    • Identification, development, implementation and execution of strategies, programs and operational improvements to support growth targets, enhance client experience, improve operating model and grow service offerings, market share and profitability.

    • Identifying, promoting, and leading process improvements, reengineering processes, and alternate business solution opportunities to effectively achieve the standards for business excellence. 

    • Reviewing and approving strategic initiatives for alignment with the All-Bank/Canadian Banking and Scotia Wealth Management strategies.

    • Participating in senior leadership meetings, steering committees, and advisory committees to develop and enhance the short and long-term strategies/vision of Private Banking.

    • Remaining abreast of market/industry trends and competitors to recommend courses of action to pro-actively capitalize on opportunities and mitigate potential risks.

 

  • Oversees the development and acceptance of proposals/business cases/strategies/project plans to facilitate short and long-term Private Banking growth objectives:

    • Leading assigned resources to thoroughly research, document, and present comprehensive, well substantiated, clear and cost-efficient proposals.

    • Reviewing plans to determine timeframe, funding limitations, procedures, and allocation of resources to various phases of the project and ensure linkages and interdependencies are identified.

    • Leading and directing key activities and project members to ensure all phases are adhering to project schedules and budgets. Ensuring schedules and plans are modified as appropriate to reflect project changes and or input from the Senior Management Team.

    • Leading the alignment of Private Banking with other business line strategies for leverage and efficiency

 

  • Leads the execution of operational day to day management of the business to support Private Banking growth objectives:

    • Oversight of sales support teams nationally to ensure a high level of client service and support.

    • Leadership and oversight of back office support teams including credit support, communications, training, regulatory/internal controls and data/mis.

    • Strong alignment with support partners across the organization to ensure elevated client service delivery

 

  • Leads the development and execution of strategic regulatory compliance and internal controls initiatives to reduce operational risk and increase organizational efficiency:

    • Reviewing and approving the design and effective adoption of all AML/KYC/Regulatory & Internal control policies across the business.

    • Leading all reviews conducted on behalf of the business including internal/external testing and regulatory reviews.

    • Leadership and direction to the field on all matters of compliance including CDIC, Privacy and PII.

 

  • Leads the development and execution of financial reporting and business metrics to measure and increase operational effectiveness:

    • Reviewing and approving all aspects of variable compensation plan execution for Private Banking including portfolio transfers, quarterly trailer payments and annual variable compensation cycle.

    • Developing and implementing enhanced credit and operational compliance monitoring to mitigate risk to the business.

    • Participate in the development of ongoing profitability modelling at a client level.

 

  • Directs day-to-day activities in a manner consistent with the Bank’s risk culture and the relevant risk appetite statement and limits.   Communicates the Bank’s risk culture and risk appetite statement throughout their teams.

 

  • Creates an environment in which his/her team pursues effective and efficient operations of his/her respective areas in accordance with Scotiabank’s Values, its Code of Conduct and the Global Sales Principles, while ensuring the adequacy, adherence to and effectiveness of day-to-day business controls to meet obligations with respect to operational, compliance, AML/ATF/sanctions and conduct risk. 

 

  • Builds a high performance environment and implements a people strategy that attracts, retains, develops and motivates their team by fostering an inclusive work environment and using a coaching mindset and behaviors; communicating vison/values/business strategy; and, managing succession and development planning for the team.

 

 

Education / Experience / Other Information 

 

  • University degree or work equivalency

  • Highly experienced in coaching/mentoring and equitable human resource management skills

  • Solid understanding of Private Banking’s objectives, strategies, and structures

  • Deep understanding of services provided by support areas such as GRM, Global Operations, AML and multiple product groups

  • Solid understanding of regulatory requirements

  • Working knowledge of products and services provided by the Bank’s specialized sales forces and other delivery channels such as GTB, Wealth Management, Retail and Small Business, etc.

  • Excellent negotiating and influencing skills – able to influence all levels of the organization through the presentation of insight based on sound investigation and experiences

  • Demonstrated ability and experience in developing and implementing strategic plan for a technology intensive business

          

                             
Working Conditions

 

  • Work in a standard office-based environment; non-standard hours are a common occurrence. Limited travel domestically.
