Purpose

The Director, Private Investment Counsel & Compliance Programs contributes to the overall success of Scotiabank’s Asset Management Compliance team by supporting and championing the team’s strategies and initiatives. 

 

The Director reports to the Vice President, Asset Management Compliance and a diverse set of stakeholders to develop, implement and oversee the compliance programs for the private investment counsel businesses within 1832 Asset Management L.P. (“Scotia PIC”) and MD Financial Management (“MD PIC”).

 

Accountabilities

 

  • Supports the Vice President, Asset Management Compliance to ensure regulatory risks are identified and managed effectively in accordance with the risk appetite of Scotiabank.
  • Develops, directs and oversees the development of the compliance programs, including monitoring and review processes, policies and procedures for Scotia PIC and MD PIC.
  • With the support of the Manager, Compliance Programs, leads the Asset Management Compliance planning and execution for all Enterprise Compliance initiatives, including implementing and maintaining enterprise controls such as regulatory change management, monitoring and testing processes, and Compliance Risk and Controls Assessments (CRCA).
  • Works with the Compliance teams who oversee multiple asset management affiliates (1832, JFL, MDFM) to deliver initiatives impacting the Asset Management Compliance Program, including developing, maintaining and implementing improvements to policies, procedures and processes to ensure they meet Global Compliance standards.
  • Responsible for ensuring the design of the Asset Management Compliance Program is aligned to Global Compliance standards and expectations.
  • As part of the Asset Management Compliance leadership team, provides knowledgeable and practical direction to the Vice President, Asset Management Compliance.
  • Fosters and maintains collaborative relationships with key internal and external stakeholders including Global Compliance, Corporate Functions, regulators and asset management business leaders to support the achievement of initiatives and overall objectives.
  • Understands how the Bank’s risk appetite and risk culture should be considered in day-to-day activities and decisions.
  • Builds a high-performance environment and implements a people strategy that attracts, retains, develops and motivates their team by fostering an inclusive work environment and using a coaching mindset and behaviours; communicating vison/values/business strategy; and, managing succession and development planning for the team.
  • Successfully engages in multiple initiatives simultaneously; and
  • Participates in projects and other duties as assigned.

 

Education/Experience

  • Minimum 10 years of financial services, asset management and/or compliance experience, preferably in a similar role;
  • Post-secondary education in a related discipline (business/economics/finance/mathematics) is preferred;
  • Thorough knowledge of the securities industry and applicable regulation impacting the business;
  • Strong analytical skills and results-oriented approach to decision making;
  • Ability to drive success in a high performing, flexible and small/medium team environment;
  • Ability to manage several ongoing projects and competing priorities concurrently;
  • Occasional travel to other offices;
  • Fluency in French or Spanish is an asset; and
  • Enthusiasm for making a positive impact to Asset Management Compliance.
