The Manager, Governance & Control (G&C) contributes to the overall success of the Global Retail Credit Risk team by contributing to the development, implementation and maintenance of the Bank’s retail risk governance and control processes and frameworks, and in alignment with regulatory requirements, organizational strategy, and risk management objectives.

 

This role is expected to have a high degree of analytical and technical knowledge and experience, combined with a strong understanding of retail and small business credit risk policies/processes/lifecycle. Experience and knowledge of the various adjudication and document retention platforms used in Canada & IB countries is an asset.

 

This role supports and works closely with the Senior Manager, Global Governance and Oversight, and interacts frequently with GRM team members, business lines across the Bank’s footprint, technical teams, data analytics teams, systems, operations, Audit, Bank regulators, and any other stakeholders as deemed necessary.

 

Is this role right for you? In this role, you will:

 

  • The responsibilities will vary, and major accountabilities can evolve, depending on the Bank’s and the Governance team’s priorities. This role offers variety and exposure as the Governance team is collaborative and has a broad mandate. The Manger, G&C will need to regularly use their skills in written/oral communication, Excel, SharePoint, and Power BI. Due to engagement with our International Banking stakeholders, the Manager requires fluent Spanish.
  • Support global retail risk governance activities, including monitoring, analysis, counseling and, challenging any breaches on policies and procedures
  • Support the development, implementation, and maintenance of the Bank’s retail risk governance framework, ensuring alignment with corporate strategy and regulatory standards
  • Understand the applicable regulatory requirements to ensure controls are adequately updated to identify control gaps and non-compliance with regulatory requirements, best practices, and internal policies and procedures
  • Identify and assess root causes of weak Governance controls and quantify their impact
  • Formulate recommendations for policy or process enhancements and/or corrective actions, keeping in mind the Bank’s customers, to address gaps against policy or user experience
  • Participate in and lead various projects as they arise within Governance
  • Manage stakeholders by reinforcing new processes and procedures through training, quality assurance checks, and follow-ups
  • Create, update, and ensure the quality of Power BI and Excel reports, Credit Risk Proposals, SharePoint content, and other Governance forms for compliance with policies and regulations
  • Collaborate with analytics or technology teams to enhance automated processes, data accuracy and reporting requirements
  • Champion a high-performance environment and contributes to an inclusive work environment
  • Actively pursues effective and efficient operations of their respective areas in accordance with Scotiabank’s Values, its Code of Conduct and the Global Sales Principles, while ensuring the adequacy, adherence to and effectiveness of day-to-day business controls to meet obligations with respect to operational, compliance, AML/ATF/sanctions and conduct risk
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to identify and assess risks across all business units and functions
  • Monitor key risk indicators (KRIs) and Early Warning Thresholds (EWT) and ensure timely reporting of deviations from established thresholds and limits, based on defined escalation metrics
  • Ensure controls are regularly tested, updated, and remain robust against emerging risks
  • Support risk governance forums by preparing materials and delivering insights for decision-making
  • Foster awareness and accountability for risk management across all levels of the Bank’s pertaining to risk controls
  • Benchmark practices against industry standards and incorporate lessons learned into the risk management processes

 

Do you have the skills that will enable you to succeed in this role? – We’d love to work with you if you have:

 

  • Fluency in Spanish is asset.
  • A University degree in Business, Statistics or Auditing is required. A minimum of three or more years of progressive, relevant and practical experience with world class organizations, preferably with financial institutions, in credit / lending functions, and a proven track record of success in informed decision-making.
  • Expert usage of Microsoft office tools, particularly Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Expereince with Power BI and asset.
  • Knowledge of SharePoint functions and permission administration is an asset.
  • High level of proficiency in critical thinking and problem solving.
  • Lean Six Sigma knowledge is an asset.
  • Basic understanding of the lending processes and the 5 C’s of credit.
  • A strong understanding of the Bank’s delivery channels, centralized processing units and knowledge of various bank adjudication platforms
  • The Manager must be extremely detail-oriented, considering both quantitative and qualitative review objectives.
  • Strong communication skills both oral and written.
  • Thorough understanding of the Bank’s three lines of defense.
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements and the financial industry in Canada and other countries where Scotiabank operates.
